Cardiac Index (CI), Stroke Volume Index (SVI)

Cardiac index is the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute indexed to 1 m² of the body surface area (BSA); the cardiac index represents the global blood flow. The PiCCO Technology provides discontinuous (transpulmonary thermodilution) and continuous (pulse contour analysis) parameters.^[1]

A decrease in cardiac index is a clear alarm signal and requires appropriate measures to manage the situation. But knowledge about cardiac index alone is not enough to make a therapeutic decision, as the cardiac index is influenced by several factors.
